Inspiration Outdoors

Simon Mendelwitz gave members an introduction to his wife Emily and his passion, their business Inspiration Outdoors, at our meeting this week.

Simon told us “if you love walking in nature, but you’re not the type to lug all your gear on your back, eat baked beans for dinner and sleep on a foam mat, you’re our kind of person. If you feel safer in a group, or just enjoy sharing conversation and experiences with others, we’re on the same page. And if you want to relax and know that someone else is taking care of all the big and little details for you – you’re in the right place with Inspiration Outdoors”

As owners and guides, married couple Simon and Emily are passionate about giving you the very best walking tours in Australia. And we think that a guided walking holiday in nature, with the benefits of a shower, a great meal and a comfortable bed at the end of each day, is one of the best holidays you can have.

In giving us some background to their foray into the business, Simon told us in 2008, he and Emily decided that their life together would be full of adventure. To celebrate and confirm this decision they walked the entire Bibbulmun Track together. It was about 1000 km and took them 8 weeks.

It was very hard to go back to their office jobs after that. Simon was working long hours as an operations manager at a large logistics company. And although the work was interesting it was what you’d call a ‘soul destroying’ job. So when the opportunity came up to take over Inspiration Outdoors in late 2010, He and Emily happily abandoned their nine to fivers and haven’t regretted it once. Their aim is to bring tours to people who couldn’t do them without their help.

Their tours are for people who like to walk long(ish) distances. That means they usually leave their accommodation pretty early each morning (between 7.30 and 8.30) and finish walking mid to late afternoon.

Participant won’t break any records on their walks – for fastest or slowest hike. They keep a steady pace, but there are plenty of opportunities to rest, take photos and appreciate the views along the way.

Walkers on the Cape to Cape

Each tour has two guides, one to walk with the group, the other to transport the bags and walkers to and from each start/finish point and most guests are in their 50s, 60s and 70s.

Simon and Emily recommend prospective participants train for about 10 weeks, including cardio, before their tour and consider making sure you have the right shoes as being a major factor in having a successful and comfortable adventure.

The company also offers opportunities for fundraising through specially arranged tours.
